Preview: Barnsley vs. Blackburn Rovers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Championship meeting between Barnsley and Blackburn Rovers, including team news and predicted lineups.

Barnsley welcome Blackburn Rovers to Oakwell on Tuesday evening having moved to within four points of safety in the Championship table.

Meanwhile, Rovers are now four points adrift in the race for the playoffs after losing out at in-form Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

Like many of the teams in contention for a playoff spot, Blackburn have dropped points since the resumption, resulting in ground being lost on the top six.

Had Cardiff City not defeated Leeds United and Preston North End, Tony Mowbray would have a different perspective on his team's current situation, but the form of the Bluebirds has left several clubs now having to play catch-up.

Blackburn had appeared well on their way to building on their success over Bristol City as they entered the final quarter-of-an-hour against Lancashire rivals Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

However, conceding two late goals have left Rovers under pressure to retain a spot in the top 10 - something which will not be maintained if they suffer defeat on Tuesday.

With Leeds, Cardiff and West Bromwich Albion all to come in quick succession, Mowbray will feel that it is imperative that three points are posted against opponents who are well on track to pull off the great escape.

After a seven-game winless run, Gerhard Struber has guided Barnsley to 13 points over the same number of fixtures, a points-per-game ratio which is on par with the top two.

While Struber or his players will not be getting ahead of themselves, recording four points and two clean sheets from games against Queens Park Rangers and Millwall will have only increased the growing optimism at the club.

Over the remaining seven fixtures, Barnsley face a mix of games against teams fighting for promotion and relegation, but that should theoretically remove the chances of any complacency which may have set in against sides which have little to play for.

At a time when the defence have registered five shutouts over seven games, there is pressure on the attack, who have netted just three times from their last six outings.

Team News

Blackburn manager Mowbray will likely hand a recall to striker Adam Armstrong, with Joe Rothwell potentially dropping out of the side.

However, Rovers will be without John Buckley, who serves the final game of his three-match ban, and the injured Corry Evans.

Amari'i Bell and Derrick Williams may earn a spot among the replacements after a spell on the sidelines.

Barring any late issues, Struber could opt against making any alternations to his Barnsley XI.

Having being brought off at half time against Millwall, youngster Elliot Simoes appears to be most at risk of losing his place in the team.

Barnsley possible starting lineup:
Sahin-Radlinger; Solibauer, Andersen, Williams; Ludewig, Palmer, Mowatt, Ritzmaier; Chaplin; Brown, Woodrow

Blackburn Rovers possible starting lineup:
Walton; Nyambe, Lenihan, Adarabioyo, Bennett; Holtby, Travis, Downing; Armstrong, Gallagher, Brereton

We say: Barnsley 1-2 Blackburn Rovers

While Barnsley are the form team heading into this contest, Blackburn have made a habit of picking up results to keep themselves in the playoff race. Despite being the marginal outsiders on Tuesday night, we expect Mowbray's team to battle their way to a narrow win.
