Calhanoglu, Kiessling rescue Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen grabbed two extra-time goals as the Bundesliga side survived a scare to beat Kaiserslautern 2-0 and move into the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal this evening.

The second-tier side defied their top-flight counterparts for over 90 minutes at the BayArena, but the cream ultimately rose to the top during the additional 30-minute period.

First, Hakan Calhanoglu stroked home a 102nd-minute free kick, before Stefan Kiessling sealed their progression in the second half of extra time with a close-range finish to spare their team's blushes.

The first chance of the game arrived in the 12th minute when Julian Brandt latched on to Karim Bellarabi's pass and saw his effort kept out by Marius Muller in the Kaiserslautern goal.

Alexander Ring had the visitors' best opportunity in the opening period, failing to beat Bernd Leno from close range with a header.

In the second half neither side really threatened, with Kaiserslautern thwarting several ventures forward by Leverkusen.

Bellarabi and Calhanoglu were both denied by Marius Muller in the final quarter, but the latter had the last laugh when he curled a free kick past his German counterpart in the 12th minute of extra time.

Kiessling, who had earlier replaced Josip Drmic, then ruled out a giant-killing by making the game safe on 113 minutes to down the visitors.
