Barcelona beat Roma to win Joan Gamper trophy

Goals from Neymar, Lionel Messi and Ivan Rakitic give Barcelona victory against Roma.

Barcelona have won the Joan Gamper trophy thanks to a comfortable 3-0 home win over Roma.

Despite a 30-minute delay in kickoff time, the hosts burst out of the blocks as Lionel Messi fired into the arms of the keeper from inside the box before Neymar missed a chance at the back post.

New keeper Wojciech Szczesny then kept out Neymar's low effort, before Rafinha blazed over from close range.

However, they finally broke the deadlock midway through when Neymar converted Jeremy Mathieu's low cross.

After a brief lull in the game, Messi doubled their lead shortly before the break with a crisp finish from the edge of the box after Neymar found him with a low pass.

Substitute Jordi Alba went close to scoring a third after the break as he dashed down the left-hand side before firing an effort narrowly wide.

It did not take them long to virtually secure victory though, as Ivan Rakitic found the top corner from outside the box.

Roma felt that they should have been awarded a penalty when Daniele De Rossi went down in the box, but the referee waved away their claims.

Barca almost added a fourth minutes later as Pedro cut inside from the wing, but his chip was saved, while Rakitic went close to repeating his earlier strike shortly before the end.
