Gerard Pique 'accepts 50% pay cut in new Barcelona deal'

Gerard Pique's new Barcelona deal has reportedly seen him take a 50% pay cut, while the Catalan giants are said to have the option to cancel his contract altogether next term.

The centre-back surprisingly penned a new contract with Ronald Koeman's side earlier this week.

The 33-year-old is now tied to the La Liga outfit until June 2024, but according to Sport, Pique accepted a 50% pay cut as part of the agreement.

The report also claims that the experienced defender needs to play in at least 35% of the team's matches during the 2021-22 campaign or Barca are free to rescind the terms.

Pique's decision to sign a new deal has allegedly left the Spaniard at the centre of a dressing-room split, with Blaugrana desperately attempting to cut costs due to the financial impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

New contracts for Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong and Clement Lenglet were also announced in the aftermath of the 5-1 win over Ferencvaros in the Champions League earlier this week.
