Barcelona looking to make La Liga derby history against Espanyol

Barcelona will be looking to create La Liga derby history when they take on Catalan rivals Espanyol in Spain's top flight on Sunday night.

Xavi's side are unbeaten in their last 23 games against Espanyol in La Liga - recording 18 wins in the process - and they will be bidding to record the best unbeaten run by any team in any derby in Spain's top flight this weekend.

Real Madrid's 23-match unbeaten run against Atletico Madrid between 2000 and 2013 is currently joint with Barcelona's record in the Barcelona derby against Espanyol.

Xavi's side have won their last two league matches, including a 4-2 success over Atletico last weekend, to move into fourth position in the table.

Espanyol have also only won 34 of their previous 173 La Liga games against Barcelona, suffering 101 defeats in the process, including a 1-0 loss in the reverse match at Camp Nou in November 2021.

Barcelona have not lost to Espanyol in La Liga since February 2009, although the points were shared in a 2-2 draw when they last locked horns at RCDE Stadium in January 2020.
