Rangers comfortably dispatch Ayr United

Rangers cruise to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ayr United in Scottish League One.

Rangers have maintained their 23-point cushion at the top of the Scottish League One with a 2-0 victory away at Ayr United this afternoon.

Ayr almost took the lead in the third minute, but Cammy Bell did well to tip Kevin Kyle's close-range effort round the post.

Ross Wallace was Rangers' main source of creative play, and the left midfielder teed up Dean Shiels and Fraser Aird in quick succession, but both attempts fell straight into the hands of David Hutton.

Bell once again kept Rangers in the game with a point-blank save from Michael Donald's effort, but Rangers almost took the lead themselves from the subsequent counter-attack, only for Aird to smash his effort against the bar before Nicky Law spooned the rebound over the bar from just six yards.

Rangers took less than sixty seconds to open the scoring after the break, as Aird burst down the right flank and fired a low cross into the box to leave Law with a simple finish.

Wallace continued to be a threat after the break, and it was more good work from the winger which created the second Rangers goal. His wicked delivery picked out Jon Daly, who made no mistake in burying his header.

Shiels almost made it three, but Hutton tipped his low effort round the post. Aird then wasted two good chances before Andrew Little was denied late on as Rangers dominated in the closing stages of the game.
