Aston Villa release Orjan Nyland

Aston Villa have announced the departure of goalkeeper Orjan Nyland by mutual consent.

The 30-year-old joined the West Midlands outfit from Ingolstadt in 2018 and went on to make 35 appearances for the club in all competitions.

However, following the arrival of Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal, Nyland fell down the pecking order at Villa Park and turned out just once for Dean Smith's side this season - a 3-1 victory against Burton Albion in the EFL Cup.

Now the Norwegian has become the second player in Aston Villa's side to terminate their contract by mutual agreement, with Jota signing for Deportivo Alaves after an underwhelming spell at Villa Park.

Nyland's departure leaves Jed Steer, Tom Heaton and Lovre Kalinic as backups to Martinez for Dean Smith at Aston Villa, who currently sit second in the Premier League table.
