Aston Villa close to Steve Clarke appointment?

Former Reading boss Steve Clarke will be appointed as Aston Villa's new assistant manager in the coming days, according to a report.

Aston Villa will reportedly name Steve Clarke as assistant manager to Roberto Di Matteo by Monday afternoon.

The Villans, preparing for life outside of the Premier League for the first time since its inception in 1992-93, appointed Di Matteo as new boss on Friday morning.

According to Sky Sports News, the wheels are now in motion to bring in more new faces as part of the Italian's backroom team, with experienced coach Clarke expected to join in the coming days.

Clarke, sacked by Reading in December and since linked with the then-vacant Celtic job, has previously enjoyed stints at Newcastle United, Chelsea, West Ham United and Liverpool.
