Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing has said that he is not willing to enter into a new deal with the club at this point.
It had been reported that the club planned to extend the services of Downing, who was named the Villans’ player of the year, but he is wary of committing to longer than the two years remaining on his contract.
“I know the club are keen for me to extend my contract as I only have two years left on my deal, and that my agent had a recent meeting with our chief executive,” he told The Northern Echo.
“However, I am 26 and at a major crossroads in my career so I won’t be committing to a new deal at the moment.”
The England international, who scored the winning goal against Liverpool on Sunday, moved to Villa Park from Middlesbrough in 2009 in a £12m deal.
Both Liverpool and Arsenal are thought to be interested in the player.
