Arsenal’s latest signing, Noni Madueke, has faced strong backlash from some sections of the club's fanbase following his arrival from Chelsea. The hashtag #NoToMadueke has been trending on social media, and an online petition opposing the transfer has gathered over 5,000 signatures. However, inside the dressing room, the mood is very different.
Midfielder Declan Rice has come out in strong support of his new teammate, suggesting that Madueke could be the key to delivering the long-awaited trophies at the Emirates.
Rice defends Madueke amid fan criticism
Arsenal confirmed the signing of Madueke last week in a £48.5m deal from Chelsea. The move has divided fans, with some welcoming the addition of a pacey winger, while others have publicly questioned the decision.
Speaking after Arsenal’s 1-0 pre-season win over AC Milan in Singapore, Rice addressed the controversy directly: “I know how determined he is. I have spoken with him and I promise you, you are going to see what he is capable of,” said Rice. “He wants to prove people wrong, he is hungry, and he wants to play for Arsenal. That is exactly the kind of player we need. He will surprise a lot of people. I cannot wait for him to get started.”
According to Rice, Madueke brings qualities that the team has lacked in recent seasons — directness, creativity, and unpredictability in one-on-one situations. Arsenal hope his arrival will give them a new dimension in attack.
A personal welcome from Rice
When Arsenal released their official video unveiling Madueke, fans noticed a handwritten letter in the footage. It was later revealed that the message came from Declan Rice himself.
“It was the club’s idea and I thought it was a beautiful gesture. It helped him feel welcome right from the start,” said Rice. “He messaged me after to say how much it meant to him.”
Madueke is expected to provide depth on both flanks, offering cover for Bukayo Saka on the right and competition for Gabriel Martinelli on the left. The 22-year-old scored 20 goals in 92 appearances for Chelsea and is seen as a dangerous attacking threat when fully fit.
Squad depth vital for title challenge
Rice highlighted that Arsenal’s lack of depth has been a recurring issue in their recent campaigns, especially when dealing with low defensive blocks.
“When your first instinct as an attacker is to take on defenders, that is such an asset,” Rice said.
“He brings that, and we have got other wide options too. But let’s be honest — we were stretched last year. Half the season we were dealing with injuries, and now we have the chance to rotate and compete on multiple fronts. That is crucial.”
Rice targeting more goals in advanced role
Arsenal have been active in the transfer market this summer. The arrivals of Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga have already strengthened the squad, with Cristhian Mosquera and Viktor Gyokeres also reportedly close to joining.
As for Rice, he is set for a more advanced role this season, transitioning into a box-to-box midfielder rather than sitting in front of the defence.
“I think the manager sees me as a player who can cover the pitch,” he explained. “After Christmas I showed what I can do in that role. I felt like I really kicked on.”
Rice ended last season with nine goals and 10 assists and is setting even higher standards for himself this term. “I put huge demands on myself. Last season I started poorly — only had 16 days off after the Euros and went straight into the Premier League. That took a mental toll. This season I want more goals, more assists, and more consistent influence over the entire campaign. The best players in the world push themselves like that. That is exactly what I want to do.”
Madueke and Rice central to Arsenal’s new era
After years of rebuilding, Arsenal now look ready to mount a serious title challenge. Under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners are adding both depth and character to their squad—players who are hungry for silverware.
Declan Rice and Noni Madueke are expected to be at the heart of that push.
“You will see for yourselves,” Rice concluded. “Madueke is the kind of player who can decide matches. And we need him here.”
