Report: Arsenal to bid for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling

Arsenal have earmarked Manchester United's Chris Smalling as a potential January signing to help solve their defensive crisis, according to reports.

The Gunners have found themselves light at the back after a spate of injuries to defenders, combined with Thomas Vermaelen's summer departure.

The Mirror claims that Arsene Wenger is keen on bringing Smalling to the Emirates, with Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal considering whether to let the 24-year-old go.
