Sports Mole's Premier League Team of the Week

Sports Mole picks out the best 11 players from the eighth round of 2015-16 Premier League fixtures.

Not for the first time this season, Jose Mourinho and Chelsea made up the majority of the headlines this weekend.

The poor start to the defence of their Premier League title continued at home to Southampton, who ran out 3-1 winners at Stamford Bridge.

Elsewhere, Arsenal blitzed Manchester United 3-0, while the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park ended in a 1-1 draw.

Manchester City hit Newcastle United for six, with triumphs also on the board for Crystal Palace, Leicester City and Stoke City.

The other three encounters - at Dean Court, the Stadium of Light and Liberty Stadium - all ended in drawn outcomes.

Here, Sports Mole has looked back over the contests and picked out the 11 most impressive players, as well as the biggest villain and best goal.

Heurelho Gomes (Watford)
He may have been a figure of ridicule when he first arrived on English shores with Tottenham in 2008, but as the years have gone by, the Brazilian has developed into a solid Premier League goalkeeper. The 34-year-old was at his very best to help the Hornets claim a point away at Bournemouth, with his most notable contribution being the penalty save to deny Glenn Murray from putting the home side 2-1 up.

Glen Johnson (Stoke City)
He may have fallen out of favour at Liverpool and with England head coach Roy Hodgson, yet Johnson appears to have been revitalised by his switch to Stoke. The right-back produced a lively showing at Villa Park, where he ended up assisting the only goal of the game for Marko Arnautovic.
Jose Fonte (Southampton)
The Portuguese centre-back set such high standards last season that anything less than that this time around was going to be noticeable. By the captain's own admission he hasn't been able to quite scale those heights this term, but he was back to something resembling his best form against the champions. Radamel Falcao was not given a sniff by the 31-year-old.
Ramiro Funes Mori (Everton)
There was the odd wobbly moment for the Argentine on his full Premier League debut against West Brom, but it was a much more steady outing in the Merseyside derby. Up against a lively pairing in Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings, Mori made a number of key challenges and interceptions.
Brendan Galloway (Everton)
In years gone by Everton would have been struggling without Leighton Baines for a lengthy period of time, but in Galloway they have found a very good replacement at left-back. The 19-year-old excelled against Everton's bitterest rivals, particularly when it came to dealing with the overlapping runs of Nathaniel Clyne. At this rate, the experienced Baines may find it difficult to reclaim his spot in the starting lineup.

Sadio Mane (Southampton)
The last player that a badly out of form Chelsea defence would have wanted to face was one like Mane. Some Man United fans scoffed when they were linked with the Senegalese winger in the summer, but boy could they do with him now. He was central to everything positive Southampton produced, with his goal a deserved reward for such a great performance.
Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur)
Is there a better footballer in the Premier League from dead-ball situations than Tottenham's Danish playmaker? Probably not. He scored two free kicks to rescue a point for the North Londoners at the Liberty Stadium, while his all round play was a joy to behold.
Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City)
The transfer fee may have been absurd, but De Bruyne has already shown just why Manuel Pellegrini was so keen to add him to his Man City squad. The Belgium international scored with a memorable volley during the rout over Newcastle and also laid on two goals. All in all it was not a bad afternoon's work from the former Chelsea man.
Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)
Arsenal fans are bound to be delighted that Sanchez has now blown off the cobwebs following a summer at the Copa America. Fresh from scoring a hat-trick last weekend, the Chilean backed that up by scoring twice against United. His first goal showed good predatory instincts, while the second was a stunning effort that flew into the top corner.

Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)
By his own high standards the Argentine had been a little off the pace this term, but he returned to form in style against a hapless Newcastle side. In the space of 20 minutes either side of the break, Aguero became just the fifth player to score five times in one Premier League match. He was substituted just after the hour mark - who knows how many he would have ended up with had he played the entire 90 minutes!
Theo Walcott (Arsenal)
The England international may not have scored as the Gunners blew Man United away, yet he still played a key role in the victory. His pace and movement off the ball was a constant thorn in the side of the United defence. He showed good awareness to set up Arsenal's second goal of the game, which was scored by Mesut Ozil.

Numpty of the week

Artur Boruc: How many ladders has Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe walked under recently? He's seen three key players suffer season-ending injuries over the last few weeks, so what he doesn't need is his goalkeeper gifting the opposition goals.

Boruc, though, will have done his manager's heart rate and hairline no favours as he made a huge error against Watford. With his side winning 1-0, the Bournemouth keeper was far too casual when the ball was played back to him. His attempted pass was intercepted by Odion Ighalo, who went on to rescue a point for the visitors when he rolled the ball into an empty net.

Goal of the week

Jeremain Lens – (Sunderland) vs. West Ham United: The Dutch midfielder may have ended up getting himself sent off later in the game, yet prior to that he provided those at the Stadium of Light with a rare moment to celebrate.

West Ham goalkeeper Adrian was by no means badly positioned as Lens approached, but the Sunderland player was still able to produce a deft chipped effort that entered the net via the underside of the crossbar.
