Thomas Vermaelen undergoes scan on calf injury

Thomas Vermaelen missed Belgium training on Monday after undergoing a scan on a calf injury at the request of Arsenal.

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen missed training with Belgium on Monday after undergoing a scan on a calf problem at the request of the club.

The centre-back returned to the starting lineup for the Gunners on Sunday during the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford due to illness to Per Mertesacker.

Vermaelen reportedly felt something after the match against United at the weekend, and the Arsenal medical team ordered the Belgium camp to look into it.

Belgium manager Marc Wilmots told Sport Wereld: "Vermaelen felt something in his calf and left at the request of Arsenal for a scan."

It remains unclear as to whether or not Vermaelen will be risked in his country's friendly on Friday.
