Jamie Redknapp: 'Jack Wilshere shouldn't play in defensive midfield role'

Jamie Redknapp feels that Jack Wilshere is not suited to play in a defensive midfield role for Arsenal as it would inhibit his attacking instincts.

Jamie Redknapp believes that Calum Chambers should play as Arsenal's defensive midfielder rather than Jack Wilshere.

Wilshere believes that he could play in the role for the Gunners after thriving in the position for England in their Euro 2016 qualifiers this season.

However, Redknapp feels that the role could inhibit the 22-year-old's attacking instincts, and believes that Chambers is the better option for Arsene Wenger's side.

He told Sky Sports News: "Jack Wilshere has thrown his hat into the ring to be their defensive midfielder but I don't think he's the answer to their problem there.

"Arsenal need someone who puts a coat on when they leave their house, who looks both ways 10 times when they cross the road. Someone who expects the worst in every situation and is ready to deal with it.

"I don't believe that's Jack Wilshere. He has a lot to offer going forward, so why restrict him to defensive midfield? Their answer is right in front of them – Calum Chambers. Previously I would have said he was too young for that position but the requirements have changed and he'd have no problem slotting in there."

Arsenal face Manchester United in their Premier League clash later today.
