Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere claims that Mikel Arteta "does not want" him to return to the first-team on a short-term contract.

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has claimed that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is against the idea of him making a return to the first team.

The 30-year-old has been in training with his former club while completing his coaching badges and searching for a new team, having been released by Bournemouth last summer.

Arsenal's recent midfield crisis has led to calls to integrate Wilshere back into the team on a short-term deal, but Arteta has always insisted that the ex-England international will not don the red and white jersey again.

Wilshere himself has now seemingly ruled out the prospect of a return, telling talkSPORT: "The manager doesn't want me to. Well, I don't think he does. I would love it to be Arsenal. But I am not in control of that."

Wilshere left Arsenal in the summer of 2018 after scoring 14 goals and setting up 30 more in 198 appearances for the club, winning two FA Cups and the Community Shield in North London.

The Gunners are expected to be in the market for midfield additions in the summer, though, with Ruben Neves thought to be a prime target for a possible £180m revamp.
