Arsenal youngster Damian Martinez believes that playing against Reading in the League Cup this week will help him prove he deserves a permanent place in the first-team squad.

Arsenal goalkeeper Damian Martinez has admitted that he is hoping to showcase his skills in a League Cup tie at Reading on Tuesday.

The Argentine starlet started his first competitive game for the Gunners in the last round, a 6-1 thrashing of League One outfit Coventry City.

Martinez thinks that facing a step up in class at the Madejski Stadium will help him prove that he is worthy of a place in the first-team squad.

He told the club's official website: "Hopefully I'll get a chance against Reading. Reading play in the Premier League so it's going to be a harder game for us [than against Coventry].

"I've been training with them for so long that you feel like you belong in the squad.

"Hopefully [the players] won't say 'Oh Emi's in goal,' but the opposite, 'Emi is playing, we have a good keeper in goal'. I want them to be confident in me."

The 20-year-old has made the substitutes bench on a number of occasions in the Premier League this season due to long-term injuries to Polish pair Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski.
