Roy Hodgson plays down Danny Welbeck's ankle injury

Hodgson plays down Welbeck injury

England manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that Danny Welbeck was taken off as a precaution in the Three Lions' 1-0 win over Estonia on Sunday evening.

Hodgson's men recorded a third straight victory to maintain their 100% record in their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign in Tallinn, but Welbeck was replaced by Rickie Lambert in the second half.

The England boss admitted that the Arsenal striker had hurt his ankle, but stated that he was unlikely to miss any games for his club when domestic action resumes next week.

He told reporters: "I don't think he's injured. He just rolled his ankle slightly and the doctors are not worried about it.

"It had to be Danny [to come off] because he turned his ankle slightly. It's no danger and he'll be fit [for Arsenal]."

Welbeck moved to the Gunners from Manchester United for around £16m on transfer deadline day.
