Huub Stevens says that Schalke 04 were worthy winners after their 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the Champions League.

Schalke 04 manager Huub Stevens has insisted that his side deserved to beat Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Die Knappen became the first side to win at the Emirates Stadium in the competition after second-half goals from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Ibrahim Afellay earned the Germans a 2-0 win.

However, Stevens feels that the record wasn't important and that his team were worthy winners.

"Records are not important – the result is what matters. In the second half we played very well and I think we deserved the win. It does not matter to me how Arsenal played; we played well in the second half and I'm very happy about that," said Stevens.

"I wasn't happy with the first half, because I don't think we showed enough courage. We played too passively, almost as if we were a bit scared, for about 35 minutes. I was happy with the organisation, though. We didn't play well, but we didn't concede and they had no chances – so I was happy with that. Our second-half performance was very satisfying.

"We take it one game at a time – of course, it will be difficult again when Arsenal come to us. We have a chance, but we will have to be better than we were in the first half tonight. Arsenal remain favourites to win this group, especially when they have all their players back."

The two sides meet again in the reverse fixture in two weeks' time.
