England suffer innings defeat in final Test with India

England's misery in the Test series with India ends with defeat by an innings and 75 runs in the fifth and final match in Chennai.

England have succumbed to a 4-0 series defeat at the hands of India after they lost the final Test match by an innings and 75 runs.

After witnessing Karun Nair's triple century on Monday, England went into the final day needing to bat out the remaining three sessions in order to secure a draw but despite a bright start, a batting collapse - which has occurred all too often in recent months - resulted in a humiliating defeat in Chennai.

Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings put on 103 for the opening wicket and, more importantly, saw out the opening 34 overs of the day but after Cook fell for 49, Jennings soon followed for 54.

England appeared powerless to nullify the threat offered by Ravindra Jadeja and Joe Root (6), Moeen Ali (44) and Ben Stokes (23) all succumbed to the spin bowler.

Stokes's dismissal left England on 193-6 - just 34 overs after they had been 103-0 - and the bottom order offered little resistance as Jos Buttler was forced to go against his natural instincts and bat defensively as Liam Dawson (0), Adil Rashid (2) and Stuart Broad (1) lost their wickets without much of a fight.

The match and series came to an end when Jadeja secured his seventh wicket when dismissing Jake Ball for a three-ball duck as England were bowled out for 207, with Buttler remaining not out on 6 from 50 deliveries.
