Resuming on 244-3, Stokes joined Joe Root, who had already brought up a ton, at the crease, and the all-rounder took it upon himself to put England further in the ascendancy.

While Root eventually fell for 153, Stokes kicked on to record his 11th Test century and before he was dismissed for 120, the Durham man also moved past 5,000 runs in the five-day format.

Ben Foakes (33) and Chris Woakes (41) helped take England to 507-9 before a declaration, Veerasammy Rampaul the pick of the West Indies bowlers with figures of 3-126.

England had two debutants in their bowling attack and one of them - Matthew Fisher - struck with just his second ball, taking the wicket of John Campbell.

However, that was as good as it got for the tourists, West Indies grinding their way to 71-1 off 27 overs before the close of play.
