Jonathan Trott and Joe Root steady England's second innings against New Zealand following the loss of Alastair Cook and Nick Compton.

England lost their captain Alastair Cook and fellow opener Nick Compton as they went about taking an unassailable lead during the day three of their Test match against New Zealand at Lord's this afternoon.

The pair returned to the crease after the morning session with the home nation on 15-0. However, Cook went with England on 36 for 21 runs when his shot off the bowling of Trent Boult was caught by a diving Dean Brownlie.

Compton then followed without England adding to their score as Neil Wagner took out his stumps with a swinging delivery. The England opener had just 15 runs to his name.

However, despite the early breakthroughs, the New Zealand bowling attack failed trouble the incoming duo of Jonathan Trott (25) and Joe Root (28).

The pair will resume after tea with England 91-2 in their second innings - a lead of 116 runs.
