Alastair Cook says that he is disappointed to draw the series in New Zealand, despite salvaging a draw in the final Test.

England captain Alastair Cook has admitted that he is disappointed to draw his side's series with New Zealand, despite their dramatic escape in the final Test in Auckland.

Having drawn the opening two matches, the series result hinged on the last ball of the third and final Test, but Matt Prior (110) and Monty Panesar (2) held on to secure a draw for the tourists.

Despite their heroic finish to the tour, Cook was still downbeat about their overall performance.

"We came here to win the series so we are disappointed we haven't done," Cook said.

"We are disappointed that we have not played well enough to win the Test series. That is the bottom line.

"We fought hard, especially in Dunedin coming back from behind there. Wellington we played a bit better. Here we haven't played as well as you need to do it in international cricket."

However, Cook did concede that he was relieved to salvage a draw.
