England closed on 196-4 after Australia fought back on the opening day of the first Ashes Test.

James Vince shared 125 with Mark Stoneman after the early loss of Alastair Cook, who was dismissed in the third over by Mitchell Starc, but Australia hit back to dismiss the pair either side of tea in Brisbane.

Joe Root's wicket had threatened to derail the innings, although Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali - 28* and 13* respectively - saw England through to the close as they finished on 196-4 on a rain-soaked opening day of action.

Australia fought hard for their wickets, with Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon their most dangerous bowlers at the Gabba.

The hosts, who are unbeaten in Brisbane since 1988, will get day two underway on Thursday night.
