Sonny Bill Williams easily beat American Chauncy Welliver to remain unbeaten in heavyweight boxing.

Rugby Union international Williams, who was boxing for the first time in two years and weighing in at 30kg less than Welliver, won on points in an eight-round fight.

Welliver, 31, had won 55 of his previous 70 fights, 22 by knockout and weighed in at 135kg on the night.

The former All Black international's seventh straight win means that he may now fight New South Wales and Cronulla Sharks rugby league captain Paul Gallen, who beat Randall Rayment on Williams's undercard.

"I have got a lot of respect for Gal, he handled himself really well in the ring tonight," Williams told reporters. "He has expressed a desire to fight and I have also so God willing we get through our seasons OK and we get to next year facing off."

Fellow New Zealand international Liam Messam was also on the undercard, beating Rhys Sullivan by a unanimous points decision.
