Birzhan Zhakypov scrapes past Jeremy Beccu

Kazakhstan's Birzhan Zhakypov has edged to a one-point victory over France's Jeremy Beccu in the Olympic light-flyweight class.

Beccu took on the role of aggressor in the opening round, but the Kazakh exposed some flaws in his defence with a few nice shots.

The scores were level at 6-6 going into the second stanza and the action started to come thick and fast when Zhakypov connected with a decent straight left.

The Frenchman responded well, slipping a few hooks before landing with two scoring shots to take a 11-10 lead going into the decider.

Beccu continued to march forward in the final round, but walked onto Zhakypov's gloves as his legs started to look weary.

The Kazakh had started to build up a head of steam as they entered the final minute on the contest, but Beccu dug deep to launch one more scoring attack.

A close fight ended with the judges awarding Zhakypov a 18-17.
