England ease into basketball semi-finals at Commonwealth Games

England women's basketball team book their place in the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games courtesy of a 62-40 victory over Jamaica on the Gold Coast.

England women's basketball team have booked their place in the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games courtesy of a 62-40 victory over Jamaica.

England won just one of their group games to finish third in Pool A, but still went into the match against Jamaica as favourites to win despite the Caribbean outfit having finished second in Pool B with two wins from their three outings.

The English quickly showed why they were fancied too, racing into an early lead in the first quarter before taking it 13-4.

The low-scoring nature of the contest continued in the second quarter as England extended their lead to 26-13 at half time, and while the scoring rate improved in the second half England rarely looked like surrendering their advantage.

England won the second quarter 22-16 and the third 14-11 to finish with a 22-point victory over Jamaica, whose star player Jennifer George was limited to just eight points - far below her average before the game of 18.7.

George did still manage a game-leading 14 rebounds, but she was unable to prevent her side from exiting the tournament as England set up a semi-final showdown with Canada.
