Steve Bruce says that he thought he "had the job" when he was interviewed to become Wolverhampton Wanderers' new manager in February.

Hull City manager Steve Bruce has revealed that he was confident of securing the Wolverhampton Wanderers' managerial spot before Terry Connor was offered the role.

It has been well-documented that the former Sunderland boss was a contender for the position following Mick McCarthy's departure in February. However, talks soon came to a head when the 51-year-old was told to "forget it".

"I thought I had the job," the Daily Star quotes Bruce as saying. "I went to speak to them and had a good conversation with the owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey. Then it went quiet for a week or ten days.

"There was contact again on the Thursday before Terry got the job, to ask if I be interested in a short-term deal until the end of the season.

"I was due to go to see them and I got a phone call on Thursday night on February 23rd – I will never forget that because it was my wedding anniversary – and I was told, 'Forget it'."

Meanwhile, Bruce is currently preparing for life in the Championship with Hull after agreeing to become the club's new manager last month.
