Wolfsburg see off Borussia Monchengladbach

Wolfsburg narrowly beat Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0 in their Bundesliga game at the Volkswagen Arena.

Wolfsburg have narrowly beaten Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0 in a topsy-turvy Bundesliga game at the Volkswagen Arena this afternoon.

It did not take long for the hosts to open the scoring as Robin Knoche smashed the ball from close range into the roof of the net on 12th minutes.

Kevin De Bruyne nearly doubled his side's lead just a minute later, but his effort flew just wide of the post.

The game found itself becoming more tense as both sides pressed on, but their respective defences managed to block each other out.

However, Wolfsburg became more dangerous towards the latter stages of the first half, with De Bruyne, Vieirinha and Maximilian Arnold registering chances before the break.

After the restart, another period of stalemate occurred as tackles and fouls repeatedly broke up play.

As in the first half, the hosts were able to step it up a gear, and before long, they were banging on the Monchengladbach door again.

Yann Sommer found himself keeping the scoreline down by pulling off save after save from the likes of Ivica Olic, Ivan Perisic, Vieirinha and De Bruyne.

The visitors actually dominated possession throughout the game, but this counted for little with Wolfsburg so threatening in the final third.

Monchengladbach were unable to make the most of the ball, and when the final whistle blew, had to accept defeat.
