A closer look at non-white managers in English football

Nuno Espirito Santo is the only non-white or from ethnic minority background manager in the top flight.

Jobi McAnuff has been named interim manager at Leyton Orient, and Darren Moore has swapped Doncaster for Sheffield Wednesday.

This means five out of the of 92 clubs in the English league system now have managers who are not white, and here the PA News Agency runs through them.

Nuno Espirito Santo (Wolves)

The only non-white or from ethnic minority background manager in the top flight, Portuguese Nuno joined Wolves in May 2017, shortly after leaving Porto. He led them to promotion to the Premier League in 2018 and to the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Wolves currently lie in 12th place.

Chris Hughton (Nottingham Forest)

Former Tottenham and Republic or Ireland defender Hughton was appointed Forest boss in October following their winless start to the season. Hughton guided both Newcastle and Brighton to promotion from the Championship, but had been out of work since he was sacked by the Seagulls at the end of the 2018/19 season.

Darren Moore (Sheffield Wednesday)

Moore has been named manager of Championship side Sheffield Wednesday after leaving his previous role at Doncaster. The 46-year-old had been in charge at Rovers since July 2019, narrowly missing out on a play-off place in his first campaign when the season was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Moore was the first Jamaican to manage in the Premier League during his spell at West Brom.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (Burton)

Former Leeds, Chelsea and Holland striker Hasselbaink was re-appointed manager of League One Burton last month. Hasselbaink's previous spell in charge began in November 2014 and he led Albion to the League Two title before leaving for QPR in December 2015.

Jobi McAnuff (Leyton Orient)

Long-serving winger McAnuff has been named interim manager at Brisbane Road after Orient parted company with head coach Ross Embleton. The 39-year-old has made 166 appearances over two spells at Orient and captained the club to the National League title in the 2018-19 season.
