Western Sydney Wanderers edge out Melbourne Victory to go top

Western Sydney Wanderers extend their unbeaten start in the A-League by beating Melbourne Victory 1-0 at Parramatta Stadium with a goal from Mark Bridge.

Western Sydney Wanderers have extended their unbeaten start in the A-League by beating Melbourne Victory at Parramatta Stadium.

Mark Bridge's first goal of the season, which came eight minutes from full time, was enough to give the Wanderers all three points in a tight affair.

Victory shaded the first half, in which Archie Thompson and Connor Pain were both denied from close range by Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic.

The hosts improved after half time and Shinji Ono almost broke the deadline on the hour mark, but the Japan star had the ball nicked off his toes as he attempted to dance around Melbourne stopper Nathan Coe.

Bridge then wasted a good chance for the Wanderers, slashing a low left-footed effort into the side-netting from close range.

However, the two-time Australia international was on target just seconds later, tapping home at the far post following an assist from substitute Labinot Haliti.

The result sends the Wanderers to the top of the table, leaving Victory fifth.
