Manchester United would be able to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer on a permanent basis for £16m, according to a report.

Manchester United would reportedly be able to sign Bayern Munich's Marcel Sabitzer on a permanent basis for just £16m during this summer's transfer window.

The English club's midfield injuries led to them moving for Sabitzer on transfer deadline day, with the Austria international arriving on loan from the German champions.

As it stands, the central midfielder is due to return to Allianz Arena at the end of the campaign, but a recent report claimed that Man United were open to signing him on a permanent basis.

The 28-year-old has another two years left to run on his contract, but Bayern are believed to be open to letting him depart ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.

According to Bild, the German champions would be looking for £16m to sell the Austrian this summer.

Sabitzer has made three Premier League appearances for Man United since his arrival, featuring off the bench against Crystal Palace before starting both games against Leeds United.

The midfielder would have been in contention to start against Barcelona in the Europa League on Thursday night, but a suspension has ruled him out of the contest.

Sabitzer arrived at Bayern from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021, and he has represented his current side on 54 occasions, contributing two goals and two assists in the process.

The Austrian represented Leipzig between 2014 and 2021, meanwhile, playing 229 times for the club in all competitions, scoring 52 goals and contributing 42 assists.

Sabitzer recently suggested that he would be open to moving to Old Trafford on a permanent basis.

"It's a loan at the moment, that's all I can say. I like it here. I'm feeling very good here. I like the team, I like the club, the atmosphere in Old Trafford. We will see what happens in the summer," said the midfielder.

"It's been a busy few days. I had to come in quick but I enjoy it. I like it so far. The team welcome me very well. It was a bit of a cold start but I had to step in quick because of the Casemiro suspension. I'm ready for that and happy playing.

"You can feel it. From the first moment on, I felt very good in the team – good spirit, good goals, we're a good team. It's fun.

"The manager talking to me a lot, what he's expecting from me. I try to fulfil that. I'm feeling good with him and his tactics and I like it so far."

Man United are expected to be in the market for at least one central midfielder this summer, while two could arrive if Scott McTominay moves on amid talk of a summer exit.
