Manchester United set a new all-time FA Cup record after beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 in the fifth round, reaching their 48th quarter-final, more than any other club.

Manchester United have set a new all-time FA Cup record following their victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground this evening.

The narrow 1-0 win booked their place in a 48th FA Cup quarter-final, the most of any other club in the competition's history.

Casemiro's 89th-minute winner was the difference for Erik ten Hag's side, who will now face Liverpool at Old Trafford in an eagerly-anticipated quarter-final.

The Red Devils may not have gone into any of those previous 47 quarter-finals as bigger underdogs as they are likely to go into this one though, following the draw which took place prior to Wednesday's action.

Liverpool have enjoyed great success of late, winning four of the previous six meetings, including 7-0 and 4-0 wins at Anfield, and a 5-0 humiliation of Man United at Old Trafford.

It was United who got the better of Liverpool in their last meeting in this competition though, beating Jurgen Klopp's side 3-2 in the fourth round back in 2021.

Unsurprisingly, given their calibre in this competition, Man United also have the most semi-final appearances of any club in FA Cup history, winning 31 of those 47 aforementioned quarter-finals.

That has translated into 12 FA Cup successes across their illustrious history, but they will have to end an eight-year wait since their last crown if they want to avoid a trophyless season.

Early exits from Europe and the EFL Cup meant that before the new year, United's only opportunity for cup success would have to be in the FA Cup, which had not started by that point.

Paired with a below-par performance in the Premier League which sees United only battling for the top four and not the title means that the FA Cup is United's only chance for silverware left available to them this campaign.

Liverpool's EFL Cup success at the weekend moved them two clear of United in the all-time honours list for English clubs, so the Red Devils's supporters would love nothing more than to knock their bitter rivals out on the way to closing that gap as soon as possible.
