A spectacular goal from Kagisho Dikgacoi gives Crystal Palace a 1-0 win over local rivals Charlton Athletic in tonight's Championship encounter at the Valley.

Crystal Palace have secured a 1-0 win over local rivals Charlton Athletic in tonight's Championship encounter at the Valley.

Wilfried Zaha caused plenty of problems for Charlton throughout the opening half and nearly created a goal after 12 minutes. However, Owen Garvan's effort from the winger's cross was cleared off the line.

Palace continued to dominate but Bradley Wright-Phillips thought that he had given the hosts the lead on 32 minutes when he headed in, only for the goal to be harshly ruled out for offside.

As the half drew to a close, the was an opportunity for Dale Stephens who saw his powerful drive tipped over by Julian Speroni.

Palace took the lead in spectacular style soon after the restart as Kagisho Dikgacoi hit a thunderous volley into the net after Charlton had failed to clear their lines from a corner.

They nearly added a second with 10 minutes to play, but Garvan's deflected effort went narrowly wide.

Charlton tried to salvage a point and came close in the final minutes as Lawrie Wilson's curler went the wrong side of the post.

There was time for late drama in the Palace box as Charlton goalkeeper Ben Hamer saw his header cleared off the line with just seconds remaining.

The win has lifted Dougie Freedman's side up to 14th in the Championship table, while Chris Powell's men stay 18th.
