After matching Youzhny in the first four games, Ward then lost four in a row to lose the opener 6-2.

The second set was exactly the same, with Ward getting to 2-2 before fading away and going two sets down.

A double-break was good enough for the Russian again in the third, this time clinching the set 6-1.

Youzhny, a quarter-finalist two years ago, will next play Jimmy Wang in the second round.
