British number two James Ward is one win away from a place in the main draw of the US Open after overcoming Vincent Millot in straight sets in the second qualifying round.

James Ward has defeated Vincent Millot in straight sets to reach the US Open final qualifying round.

After easing through his first-round encounter, the British number two broke twice during the opener to continue his impressive form.

The 27-year-old secured an early break in the second before being pegged back by the Frenchman, but the Londoner struck again in the ninth game to seal a 6-4 6-4 victory.

Ward will now play either Radu Albot or Marton Fucsovics for a place in the main draw.
