Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overcomes Jack Sock to reach US Open quarter-finals

Tsonga overcomes Sock to reach last eight

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has progressed through to the US Open quarter-finals with a four-set win over Jack Sock.

The ninth seed has never advanced past the last eight at Flushing Meadows but he has given himself another opportunity to overcome that hurdle after seeing off his American opponent by a 6-3 6-3 6-7 6-2 scoreline.

Sock boasts one of the biggest serves on the ATP Tour, but Tsonga was able to register a break in each of the first two sets to move to the brink of the next round.

The third proved to be a closer affair as it went to a tie-break but despite getting to within two points of victory, Tsonga let Sock back in as the New York crowd sensed a comeback from their player who had reached the last 16 of a Grand Slam for just the second time in his career.

However, it was not to be for the 26nd seed as Tsonga dominated the fourth set, and two more breaks of serve were enough to secure a showdown with either Novak Djokovic or Kyle Edmund.
