Lucie Safarova falls at US Open first-round hurdle against Lesia Tsurenko

Sixth seed Lucie Safarova is knocked out of the US Open by Lesia Tsurenko in straight sets in the first round.

Lucie Safarova's US Open campaign has come to an end in the first round following a 6-4 6-1 defeat to Lesia Tsurenko.

Both competitors squandered early chances to go a break up early in the first set, but it was Tsurenko who eventually took the opportunity to give herself the edge.

Sixth seed Safarova dropped serve once again, and despite breaking back instantly in the next game, it was not enough to launch a comeback as she relinquished the first set.

Tsurenko kept the momentum as she snatched serve on her second break point of the opening game of the second set, leaving her opponent with an uphill battle.

The 28-year-old Czech could not recover as Tsurenko stormed to a 4-0 lead, and despite Safarova initially saving three break points, she could not do enough to prevent match point.

Safarova is the seventh seeded woman to get knocked out in the first round.
