Men's 10th seed Kei Nishikori has advanced to the second round of the US Open by overcoming American wildcard Wayne Odesnik in straight sets.
The 24-year-old needed just over two hours to get the better of left-hander Odesnik 6-2 6-4 6-2.
Nishikori, who has never bettered his fourth-round appearance on his tournament debut in 2008 at Flushing Meadows, got off to a strong start by breaking Odesnik in the first game.
He claimed the opener with his fifth set point but then struggled at the start of the second.
Odesnik broke to go 3-1 in front, but couldn't consolidate the advantage as Nishikori won four games on the trot before sealing the set 6-4.
The third and final set never looked in doubt as Nishikori made two early breaks to go 4-0 in front before finishing the encounter out on his first match point.
Next up for the Japanese in round two is either another American in Jack Sock or Spain's Pablo Andujar.
