Number 10 seed Gael Monfils has safely secured his passage into round two of the US Open with a 6-4 6-2 7-6(5) victory over Gilles Muller.
The Frenchman, who has never made it beyond the quarter-finals of the competition, progressed through in a time of just over two hours.
Monfils held throughout the first set, capitalising on his opponent's loss of serve in the opening game of the contest to ease ahead at Flushing Meadows.
Muller, currently ranked at 37 in the world, lost serve twice more in the second set to put Monfils on the brink of a place in round two, but the third set proved to be a tighter affair.
A tie-break was required to separate the pair, with Monfils taking three points on the bounce to edge it and claim victory.
