Ferrer through at Flushing Meadows

World number five David Ferrer booked his place in the final 16 of the US Open at the expense of Lleyton Hewitt this evening.

The opening set proved to be an even contest between these two players and as a result a tie-break was required to determine a winner.

There was also very little to separate the duo in the breaker as service games were traded on numerous occasions.

It was Ferrer who eventually took a one-set lead as he emerged an 11-9 victor.

However, veteran Australian Hewitt responded with a break of Ferrer's serve to claim the second set 6-4.

Back came Ferrer in the next two sets though, with the Spaniard dropping just three games on his way to sealing his spot in round four 6-3 6-0.

He will now face either Richard Gasquet or Steve Johnson.
