Britain's Kyle Edmund stuns Richard Gasquet in first round of US Open

Britain's Kyle Edmund seals a shock straight-sets victory over Richard Gasquet in the first round of the US Open.

Britain's Kyle Edmund has grabbed a shock victory in the first round of the US Open by ousting 13th seed Richard Gasquet in straight sets.

The world number 84 put on an impressive display to seal a 6-2 6-2 6-3 win in one hour and 42 minutes at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Edmund recorded the best result of his career so far, while Gasquet - a 2013 semi-finalist - never got going as he lost serve six times during the match.

The Brit set the tone of the contest by going an early break up, and he comfortably took a one-set lead on the hard court in 28 minutes, dropping just four points on serve.

Gasquet struggled to find his feet as he failed to create a single break point in the second, with Edmund grabbing a double break to extend his advantage.

The world number 15 knew that his time in the Grand Slam was coming to an abrupt end, so tried to launch a comeback in the third set by breaking Edmund for the first time in the match.

The Davis Cup champion responded, though, as he broke back to draw games level on 3-3 before snatching serve again to complete the match and progress into the second round.
