Serena Williams has played down her row with the umpire during her US Open women's singles final defeat to Sam Stosur.

The American was left furious with umpire Eva Asderaki after she had called Williams at the start of the second set for shouting in celebration before the ball was dead, which handed the Australian an important break of serve.

"I think everyone is so intense out there," said Williams. "I was really intense, and everyone just wants to do great. I know I did.

"I just am really excited to be here really and to have gotten so far. To get here has been a really great experience for me. I regret losing, but I think there was nothing I could do today. I think Sam played really, really well."

When asked if she remebered what she had said to Asderaki, the three-time champion replied: "I don't even remember what I said. It was just so intense out there. It's the final for me, and I was just... I have to go... I guess I'll see it on YouTube. I don't know. I was just in the zone."

The 29-year-old is currently serving a two-year suspended sentence after verbally abusing a line judge at the event in 2009. If she is penalised for this incident, she could be banned from playing in the Flushing Meadows tournament for the next three years.

Reports suggest that event organisers will confirm whether they will take action against Williams on Monday.
