The US Open increases prize money for players at this year's tournament.

The US Open will increase the prize money for the singles competitions in this year's tournament.

The United States Tennis Association have announced that the men's and women's winners will each receive $19m (£12.2m), an 11% increase on 2011.

Meanwhile, players will see a 21% increase in their earnings if they lose in the first round and a 19% increase if they exit in the second.

The move comes after some of the game's leading figures pressured Grand Slam officials earlier in the year to help lower-ranked competitors.

The US Open gets underway at Flushing Meadows, New York on Monday, August 27.
