Result: Novak Djokovic takes US Open crown from Rafael Nadal

Result: Djokovic seals US Open win

Novak Djokovic has notched up his fourth Grand Slam title and his first at the US Open with a four-set men's final win over Rafael Nadal.

The 24-year-old number one seed battled through a back injury to defeat the Spaniard - the 2010 champion - in four hours, 10 minutes of play.

Nadal started well, breaking in the second game, but then went on to lose six games in a row as Djokovic took the set 6-2.

The second set featured a dramatic third game that lasted 17 minutes and included eight deuces before finally going Djokovic's way. It was a frustration for Nadal that characterised the match, as he went on to lose the second set 6-4.

Longer play worked to Nadal's favour and while at one point in the third set it appeared to be in the bag for Djokovic, Nadal battled back from 5-6 down to take the set with a 7-3 tiebreaker.

Back problems were a concern for the Serb as the fourth set got underway, with a medical timeout briefly interrupting proceedings, but Nadal was unable to capitalise as Djokovic powered through to a 6-1 win for the title.

The US Open win is Djokovic's third Grand Slam win of the year, following successes at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. In their head-to-head, Nadal still leads 16-13.
