World number two Andy Murray to play Lukas Rosol in first round of US Open

World number two Andy Murray will face Lukas Rosol in the first round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray has been drawn against Lukas Rosol in the first round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

The world number two will head to New York on the back of an impressive season having won the Rome Masters, the Aegon Championship, Wimbledon and an Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro.

Murray's Czech opponent Rosol previously defeated Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, but the world number 82 has never progressed further than the second round at the US Open.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic will face Jerzy Janowicz in the first round, and pressure is on the Serbian after he suffered an early exit at Wimbledon and failed to get past the first round at the Olympics.

Rafael Nadal, who is in Djokovic's half of the draw, will face Denis Istomin in his opener, and could meet Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Stanislas Wawrinka, who is in Murray's half, faces a potential final-eight clash against Dominic Thiem, while Djokovic could go head to head with Marin Cilic.

Murray's possible quarter-final opponent is Kei Nishikori, and it is a tough draw for Nick Kyrgios, who could meet Bernard Tomic and Wawrinka in the third and fourth rounds respectively.

Elsewhere, there is a repeat of the 2014 semi-final in the women's opening round as Serena Williams has been drawn against Ekaterina Makarova.

Meanwhile, Britain's Dan Evans will take on Rajeev Ram, while Heather Watson and Naomi Broady will face qualifiers, and Johanna Konta will go head to head with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
