US Open Day 11: Serena Williams closes in on Grand Slam record

Williams will meet Andreescu in the final at Flushing Meadows.

Serena Williams beat Elina Svitolina in straight sets to reach another final and move to within one win of tying the all-time grand slam record of 24.

She will meet Bianca Andreescu, who beat Belinda Bencic, in Saturday's final.

A drop shot to set up a perfectly executed volley. Williams had Svitolina on a piece of string in the second set of her 6-3 6-1 win.

Stat of the day

There will be four different women's grand slam champions in the same season for the third year in a row. Naomi Osaka (Australian Open), Ashleigh Barty (French Open) and Simona Halep (Wimbledon) are this year's other winners.

Teenage kicks

Andreescu, the 19-year-old from Canada, came from a pair of breaks down in the second set to beat Bencic 7-6 (3) 7-5 and reach her first grand slam final.

Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski ran the top seeds, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah of Colombia, very close but bowed out at the semi-final stage of the men's doubles 7-6 (5) 7-6 (8). Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewett are through to the men's wheelchair doubles final.
