British number one Andy Murray has beaten Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets to level the Davis Cup quarter-final against France at one point each.

Murray's victory at Queen's Club comes after James Ward fell to Gilles Simon in the opening match earlier today.

Murray and Tsonga, the world numbers three and 12 respectively, both started confidently on serve and neither offered up a break point in the first nine games.

Tsonga had to save a set point on his serve when 5-4 down and then was broken by Murray in the last game before the tie-break as the Scot grabbed his chance to prevent the breaker.

Murray could not maintain his momentum at the start of the second set as Tsonga broke instantly to move 2-0 in front.

Murray broke back in the sixth game and this time a tie-break would be required to separate the pair, in which they traded set points before Murray came through 12-10 to move two sets in front.

Losing the tie-break appeared to take the wind out of Tsonga's sails as Murray cruised to victory 6-2 in the third.
