Kvitova squeezes past Bondarenko

Czech sixth seed Petra Kvitova has edged past Kateryna Bondarenko in three sets in the opening round of the women's Olympic singles at Wimbledon.

The 2011 Wimbledon champion dropped two service games in the opening set but steadied herself to take it 6-4.

As both players struggled to hold serve in the second, Bondarenko fought hard to win 7-5.

An out-of-sorts Kvitova then proved too much for her opponent in the third as she served out the match 6-4.

Kvitova will meet China's Peng Shuai in the second round.
