Australia appoint Cheika as new coach

Australia have named Michael Cheika as their new coach following the resignation of Ewen McKenzie.

McKenzie stepped down on Saturday in the aftermath of their narrow defeat to New Zealand, having been caught up in a public row with full-back Kurtley Beale.

Cheika will resume his duties with New South Wales Waratahs, whom he led to the Super League title last season, while preparing the Wallabies for the 2015 World Cup. Australian Rugby Union chief Bill Pulver feels that the 47-year-old can lead them to victory in England next year.

He said in a statement: "We believe that Michael is the man to lead Australia to victory at next year's World Cup."

Australia depart for their tour of Europe, during which they will play England, Wales, Ireland and France, on Friday.
