Wigan Warriors beaten in Super League opener

Jermaine McGillvary scores a hat-trick to help Huddersfield Giants to a 24-8 win over Wigan Warriors in the opening game of the Super League season.

Wigan Warriors have started the defence of their Super League title with defeat to the Huddersfield Giants.

Brett Ferres got the visitors off to a good start with an early try before a quick-fire brace from Jermaine McGillvary left them in a commanding position.

However, reigning Man of Steel Danny Brough struggled with the kicking duties, missing all three conversions and a drop goal attempt in the opening half.

A string of mistakes let the defending champions back into the match after the break as Brough missed the chance to add a fourth Giants try, before handling errors allowed Joe Burgess and Iain Thornley to score for the hosts.

Huddersfield were able to regain their composure though, with McGillvary completing his hat-trick, before Scott Grix made sure of the win with a fifth try for the Giants inside the final 10 minutes.
